ICE was involved in the world’s largest concrete cathodic protection project at Fisherman Island, Port of Brisbane. The A$10 million design and build contract for the rehabilitation of container berths 4 and 5, totaled 600 metres in length. The Port’s primary requirement was to address the onset of severe concrete deterioration to the wharves’ substructure, which was confined to the crane support beams, the relieving slab between reclamation and structure, the abutment wall and fender panels. The structure had to continue to function as a fully operational container wharf, whilst rehabilitation works were being carried out. This project was completed successfully using a combination of hydro-demolition performed by ICE, gunite concrete repair and cathodic protection. The rehabilitation of berths 4 and 5 at Fisherman Islands is an outstanding example of what can be achieved with trust and co-operation between all parties.
